WHAT: Get yourself and dog out for a walk, and get maths in, too.
HOW: Depending on your child’s level, make up cards with different directions on it, such as: Round to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000, etc. How many 10s in the number? How many 100s? Is it even or odd? How many more to make the next 100? What is something that you think weighs that much in grams/kilograms? Multiply the number by 10/100/1,000. Double the number. Halve the number. Parent to decide where decimal could go (learner reads it; change the decimal point position, etc.).
When the adult plays music from their phone, learners FREEZE. Now learners draw a card from the adult. Read the address nearest to you. Learner reads aloud the address and answers the card. Parents: use the ones your child missed to use for future learning opportunities.
Sharing possibility: Share photos from your walk with your class by adding to a teacher’s Flip grid or let us know what maths progression you’re working on by adding to a hub Padlet.
